Dolby Digital has been in cinemas since 1992, in two-channel DBS since1994, in consumer laser discs since early 1995, and was selected to providemultichannel surround sound for digital broadcasts in the U.S. of bothHDTV and standard-resolution television. Broadcasters in other countriesare currently evaluating the AC-3 system. The multichannel audio formathas also become the de-facto standard for DVD audio around the world.
Dolby Digital creates true stereo surround effects for an expanded senseof depth, localization, and overall realism. The system is based on AC-3,which provides discrete channels for left, right, and center speakers atthe front, two surround speakers at the sides, and a subwoofer. Dolby Digitalis also compatible with analog Surround Sound reproducers.
The system has a remarkable data-rate efficiency, reproducing all sixdiscrete channels of sound at a lower bit rate than is needed for justone channel on a Compact Disc.
This is a good opportunity for those interested in compression and othertechniques to learn more about the state of the art.
