    Program

    This month's meeting is a good follow-on to our November presentation atSony, in which electronic cinema expert Larry Thorpe showed some of theadvantages of video over film, but also noted the concessions video equipmentmanufacturers are making to give video in motion picture production a "filmlook".

    Film is far from dead and in fact is doing better than ever. Producersand viewers like the look of film, including its distinctive 24-frame motionrendering—some people even like film's grain and gate weave!

    Motion-picture processing labs such as Monaco are playing a vital rolein the convergence of film and video, providing media makers with an increasingnumber of services for film, film to video, and film to digital. John Carlson,a 30-year veteran of the film and video business, and the staff of Monacowill show how they bridge the gap between the two imaging methods. We willtour four of the company’s divisions, each featuring recent equipment changesand additions:

    1. Monaco/Cinesite Film Scanning and Recording: This new high-tech cleanroom offers 2K and 4K scanning (2000- and 4000-pixel resolution) from 16or 35mm film to digital files and 2K and 4K recording back to film. Filmmakers and animators use the system for feature special effects;

    2. Recent improvements in film processing, with a new custom-built 16/35mmnegative processor, recently rebuilt chemical analysis facilities, anda new 16/35mm black-and-white processor for camera negative and film restorationmasters;

    3. Improvements to Monaco’s two Quadra telecine suites, featuring theAaton automatic sound syncing system;

    4. Updated screening area with Dolby Digital playback and 16/35mm screeningroom.

    Each tour will see samples of scanning and recording.
