Program: The topic of the meeting is "Loudness" in Broadcasting
and Film. Loud ads have been a problem in broadcasting for a long time;
annoyingly loud trailers and ads are invading cinemas. Steve Lyman and
Ioan Allen will discuss and demonstrate the different tools and techniques
being developed to control loudness in these two different areas.
Ioan
Allen joined Dolby Laboratories in 1969, and was in large part responsible
for the origination and development of the Dolby Stereo film program. He
is a Fellow of SMPTE, AES, and BKSTS and is active in US and world
standards organizations. A past president of the International Theatre
Equipment Association and past Engineering Director - Motion Pictures
for SMPTE, he is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern
California School of Cinema-Television. Mr. Allen has received much recognition
for his work over the years, including the Samuel L. Warner Award for contributions
to motion picture sound (1985), the Scientific and Engineering Awards from
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (1979, 1987, and 2001),
as well as an Oscar (1989). From the National Association of Theatre Owners
(NATO), Mr. Allen received the B. V. Sturdivant Award for extraordinary
service to the exhibition industry (1998), and the Moving Image Society
(in Britain) gave him the BKSTS Outstanding Contribution to the Industry
Award (1999). Most recently, Mr. Allen was honored for his contributions
to the film sound industry with the Ken Mason Award from the Intersociety
for the Enhancement of Theatrical Presentation (2002).
