6:00-6:55 PM:No-host dinner in the Fuddruckers Restaurant "Mural Room" at the front entrance on Junipero Serra Blvd. in Digidesign/Avid's building, 1st floor, 2001 Pacific Plaza, Daly City; the SMPTE dining area is on the left of the "Mural Room"

7:00-7:30 PM: Soft drinks and discussion in the Digidesign/Avid 2nd floor lobby; soft drinks will be served. You can also get coffee or juice from Starbucks and Jamba Juice downstairs on the 1st floor before coming up the elevators. We will provide the required visitor escorts to 2nd and 4th floors. PLEASE NOTE: After 7:00 PM, you have to enter the Digidesign building from the main entrance on the Junipero Serra (west) side. Sign in with security and wait at the elevators in the lobby for an escort to the 3rd floor. Please arrive before 7:30; security will not allow unguided access and the guides will be seated at 7:30.

7:30-9:00 PM: TV Town Hall meeting on the 4th floor. After the meeting, some might want to attend a late movie next door at the new Pacific Plaza Century Theater Century-20 Daly City.
 

Program:TV TOWN HALL, SignaSys' first national tour, is directed at both public and commercial station personnel interested in the current state of the industry, although facility people will also greatly benefit greatly from the event. After a brief presentation by Jim Boston, "TV Town Hall" will provide a forum for engineering and management people to share their views on "hot topics" facing us today, as well as what's next in the future of broadcasting. The road tour also provides the basis for research for a follow-up book to Jim Boston's previous bestseller, DTV Survival Guide.

TV Town Hall topics include:

• Multi-Channel Broadcasting
• New facility topology, architecture and workflow
• New technologies, such as HD and the major strides in graphics and servers
• Traditional routing versus the push toward "video networks"
• Encoding and multiplexing
• Automation and traffic
• PSIP and other metadata
• Centralcasting, the new master control and other new workflow approaches
• The application layer that ties the hardware into a DTV facility
• Various emergency and other backup systems

After the presentation, we will open up the floor to audience discussion, with topics such as:

• Will terrestrial broadcast eventually go away?
• What's going right and wrong about the transition?
• What will your station look like in 5/10 years?
• Will cable and broadcasters reach a working relationship?
• What is your legislation wish list?
• Is HD the killer app?
• Will there still be television techs in the future or will we all become IT folks?
• Will our content be considered television or simply "rich media" in the future?
• How does the broadcaster compete with everything else trying to get through the portal onto the viewers "home network"?
• Doing DTV in markets smaller than 100 requires...?
• What technology is still missing, what is being misused and what is being ignored?

Jim Boston has been in the television industry for over 25 years. He has done work in the industry ranging from equipment maintenance to board- and system-level design engineering, and has also held management positions at Scripps-Howard, The Evers Group, and as Engineer-In-Charge on both production and satellite
trucks.
