Maximizing HD Cable Performance — Especially 1080p/60

Speakers:

  • Date & time: Wednesday, 29 July 2009
  • Program:

This month, the San Francisco Section returns to the stuff on which everything we do depends: “all them wires”! Cable not optimized for its intended use can kill the technical performance of an otherwise great facility. We need to maximize the performance of the cables we use for high-definition digital video, especially for 1080p/60.

How can we judge cable quality? Steve will describe how digital video cable is designed and manufactured and how its installation can affect the performance of our systems. He’ll show us how to measure return loss and how to analyze cable “characteristic impedance” and test for maximize performance.

Join us for a no-host dinner at Harry’s Hofbräu in Redwood City—where the beer is as good as the food!—with acclaimed author, engineer, and speaker Steve Lampen, who will prove, yet again, that cable and wire can be the most interesting part of any installation!

Steve Lampen has had an extensive career in broadcast engineering and installation, film production, and electronic distribution. He holds an FCC Lifetime General License (formerly a First Class FCC License) and is an SBE Certified Broadcast Engineer. On the data side, he's a BICSI Registered Communication Distribution Designer. His latest book, The Audio-Video Cable Installer’s Pocket Guide, is published by McGraw-Hill.

HERE'S WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT STEVE LAMPEN:
Steve ‘wrote the book’, literally, on cable applications and problem solving. He has for years, represented the foremost manufacturer of audio/video/data cable in the world. He is without peer as a speaker/presenter to technical audiences. He imparts knowledge in a smooth, friendly manner holding the attention of groups from just a few to hundreds of engineers. I have never seen Steve unable to respond to a question on his subjects, always informative, never confrontational.”
    - James A. Smith, Past President, Society of Television Engineers, BFA, Burbank

Steve Lampen puts on a fantastic presentation. He not only really knows all of the details on wire and the use of wire but is able to present it in an interesting and informative method. I agree that papers that present ‘A New Way of Doing Something Really Arcane’ is boring and worthless and I usually avoid them myself. But Steve is in another completely different league.”
    - Bill Ruck, Broadcast Engineer, San Francisco

Steve has no problem holding his audience's attention. Always stimulating, the material is solid, the graphics support the verbal, and Steve has an engaging humor-filled manner that keeps the audience plugged in.”
    - Dale Reed, Trompeter Electronics, Mesa, AZ
