Program
The marriage of film and video over the years has only been accomplishedthrough the acceptance of trade-offs. Video derived from a standard 24frames-per-second film master undergoes a translation to 50 fps for 625-linedelivery systems, and 59.94 fps in the 525 world. Both translations exhibitvideo and audio artifacts that, until today, most professionals and theirviewers have accepted. As we reach higher levels video quality with +1000-line picture resolutionand improved audio, the trade-offs in today's film-to-video transfers mayno longer be acceptable to producers, to program distributors, or evento their viewers.
Luke Freeman will discuss these trade-offs and present an alternativeapproach for the future marriage of film and video. Using D-1 tapes,Luke will demonstrate the proposed new film rate of 25 fps rather than24, that will help eliminate some transfer artifacts.
An exciting new standard may emerge from Sony's telecine development.Right now, this is a work in progress, but you may be seeing history made.If you're involved in any aspect of program production or distribution, you could become a part of that process. Come down to Sony headquartersin San Jose, hear from Luke what they're doing, and let them know whatyou think.
In addition to film-to-video topics -- assuming the "Loan & Consignment"gods are smiling upon us as the ITS show wraps up -- Sony will try to havesome of their latest HDCAM gear for us to look at.
