With the proliferation of DTV standards, an already awkward situation couldget even more confusing! DTV expert and SMPTE-SF friend Phil Livingstonreturns to update us on the latest developments in advanced TV since the1998 NAB convention. Recent announcements by the major television networksabout their adoption of various standards sanctioned by the F.C.C. seemto highlight some industry trends. Yet there are still many questions aboutthe broadcast plant infrastructure and how producers can meet the technicaldemands of broadcasters and cablecasters. After Phil talked to us about DTV last July, many told us his presentationwas one of the most informative of the year. This month, Phil will againoffer his unique perspective on advanced digital television. He has 30years of broadcast experience, serves as the director and general managerof Panasonic Broadcast & Digital Systems, and has actively participatedin leading-edge equipment development. He currently chairs the SMPTE P-18committee responsible for TV production standards. If you want a candidassessment of where we're heading with DTV — including what to look forand possibly what to avoid — you should be sure to attend this SMPTE meeting.
As they did in their presentation a year ago, Phil and Panasonic repGary Youngs will come through with a good hardware demo featuring the latestDVCPRO-50i and DVCPRO-50p gear, which also records and plays "regular"25 MHz DVCPRO. 480-progressive is becoming the DTV flavor of choice formany broadcasters, and you'll see why at this demo, which will include480p camcorders and editing decks. Phil and Gary will also show Panasonic'shigh-definition D-5 VTR and its HDTV processor, as well as the latest 16x9HD monitors, both professional and consumer.
