  • Program

We've arranged four great activities on what promisesto be a
beautiful Saturday morning and early afternoon:
Now in its 26th year, the Napa Valley College TelecommunicationsDepartment offers one of the most successful training programs in the nationfor video maintenance engineers. Napa places nearly 100% of their graduatesevery year. Their exceptionally well-equipped training facilities includeanalog and digital SDTV and HDTV, one of the reasons their students areable to move from the classroom directly into employment in the industry. As a part of the presentation by Gary Vann, the Program Coordinator, you'llbe able to run hands-on demos of their state-of-the-art training gear.

Some say the nationwide number of qualified techniciansable to troubleshoot increasingly complex digital gear is continuing todecline, while the demands for competent diagnostic work are increasing. As one industry wag put it, "The expertise needs to be built into the hardware."Tektronix is addressing part of that problem with their PQA-200Picture Quality Analysis system. Mike Waidson, Tektronix ApplicationsEngineer, will introduce the PQA-200 to members of our section, one ofthe first post-NAB public demonstrations in northern California of thisnew approach to video maintenance.

The PQA is able to look at a sample of video overtime -- several seconds -- and provide both objective and subjective measurementsof digital and analog parameters. The unit gives a picture-quality ratingmuch like an expert in the field can do. Yet, the PQA-200 is not goingto put video technicians out of work! The unit informs the operator onduty that a condition is developing that requires expert intervention --the kind that experienced Napa graduates can handle.

We will divide meeting attendees into small groups. While arrivals gather for refreshments, one group will tour the facilityand demo the training gear, while another group will have a hands-on sessionwith the Tek PQA-200.

Following the meeting, we'll have a no-host lunchnearby in one of California's most picturesque areas. A pleasant tour throughNapa Valley is reason enough to drive up for the show! See you there.
