6:30 PM social hour and Equipment Demos
7:30 PM Meeting Begins
Manufacturers make the NAB show, and we've got three of their perspectives.SMPTE-SF Chair Rick Reagan will get things started with comments aboutSGI and the movies, including their work with Sony on HDCAM. SMPTE-SF ManagerJohn Hartwell will add highlights of the Sony side of the story, as presentedat NAB, as well as aspects of the rest of the show that he saw. Gary Youngs,SMPTE-SF Manager, will give us the latest on Panasonic's DVCPRO and DVCPRO-100HDapproach to video production, and also share his take on where we're headedwith DTV in general, based on what he saw at the show.
You'll be glad to hear that Roy Trumbull of KRON-TV can join us. Royis not afraid to point out the shortcomings of the emperor's wardrobe, and this evening will be no exception. Clearly there are a lot of goodthings happening in (H)DTV that he’ll tell us about, but there's also somenonsense to beware of. Roy will tell us a bit about what he saw at thisyear's NAB, and, based on that, help us understand what belongs up on thetop shelf vs. down in the circular file.
Adam Wilt will end the meeting with his take on better/faster/cheapervideo production and post-production, with toys ranging from DV to HDTV.Adam went to the NAB show as an independent observer not tied to boothduty, so he had a ringside seat to a wide range of the action.
If you didn't get to Vegas and want to hear firsthand about some ofthe highlights of the show -- or if you did go and, like many people, youfelt you missed a lot of what was shown -- be sure to attend this SMPTEmeeting. You'll have a chance to ask questions, as well as share your owninsights into the state of the art, as reflected at the 1999 NAB Convention.
SMPTEsf welcomes members and friends to attend without charge.
